What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a SIM that lives inside the phone's hardware rather than on a removable card. You download a plan — usually with a QR code — and the phone runs it as a second line. Here is what that means specifically for a trip to Britain.
How an eSIM works
An eSIM-capable phone carries a small built-in chip able to hold one or more mobile plans. Buy a plan and you get an activation code — in the UK eSIM app it is just sitting there, inside your order. The phone writes it onto the chip, and from that point it behaves like any ordinary SIM.
The eSIM runs alongside your physical SIM rather than replacing it, so the phone keeps both live at once. Your own number stays reachable, and the eSIM quietly does the data work on a UK network.
eSIM or a prepaid SIM bought in the UK
Buying a SIM in Britain is honestly not hard — supermarkets and high-street shops sell them, and nobody asks for your passport. It is still an errand: a shop to find after a long flight, a queue, a top-up in pounds you may never use again, and a sliver of plastic to not lose for the rest of the trip. An eSIM arrives instantly, installs in about two minutes, and cannot fall down the side of a hire car seat.
Say the trade-off out loud: a local SIM gives you a UK phone number, and this data plan does not. Most British services accept a foreign number; the occasional delivery app or booking system prefers a domestic one for its verification texts. If you only need the internet, the eSIM is faster and simpler. If you need a number a British service can text — a long stay, a bank account, a flat — buy a local SIM as well.
Which phones support eSIM?
iPhone XS onward, Samsung Galaxy S20 onward, Google Pixel 3 onward, and most current mid-range and flagship Android handsets. Recent iPhones sold in several markets — the 14 onward in the US among them — drop the SIM tray entirely. A handful of regional variants still ship without eSIM, so it is worth checking your exact model before buying a plan.
Why it suits a trip to the UK
Since Brexit, the EU's roam-like-at-home rules no longer cover Britain, and most European carriers have put UK roaming charges back on the tariff — while for visitors from the Americas, Asia and everywhere else, the UK was always billed as international roaming. Either way, an eSIM means no roaming statement waiting at home and no errand on your first morning.
Install the plan before you fly, and once the aircraft door opens the phone picks up a network by itself. Messaging apps, the banking app and your own number all keep working exactly as before.
Is an eSIM secure?
At least as secure as a physical SIM, arguably more so. The profile lives in a dedicated secure chip rather than on a card someone could simply pick up, and installing or deleting it requires the unlocked phone physically in hand.
